So often when we are going through a tough time, we are told to just "keep our chin up" or "stay positive." But what does that actually mean? And how can we do that when it feels like the weight of the world is on our shoulders?
The truth is, our mindset matters. A lot. Our mindset is the lens through which we see the world. It's the filter through which we process our experiences. And it's the foundation on which our beliefs and opinions are built. So if we want to overcome our struggles, we need to make sure that our mindset is in the right place.
The first step is acknowledging that your mindset matters. Your mind is a powerful tool, and it can either be your greatest ally or your worst enemy. If you believe that you can overcome your struggles, then you will be more likely to take the necessary steps to do so. But if you believe that you're doomed to fail, then you probably won't even try.
Next, you need to take a close look at your mindset and identify any negative thinking patterns that might be holding you back. Once you've done that, you can start working on reframing your thoughts in a more positive light. For example, instead of telling yourself "I'll never be able to do this," try saying "I can do this one step at a time."
It's also important to cultivate a support system of people who will encourage and motivate you. These people should be ones who truly believe in your ability to overcome whatever challenges you're facing. There is also plenty of help on line. If you want to learn how to make a cake, you go to you tube and find a recipe that appeals to you. You can do the same for your mindset. There are some amazing people offering some amazing encouragement online.
If you feel you need more help than a good book or Youtube video to get yourself on track, I recommend you contact a professional. There are plenty of certified mindset coaches out there. For me it was a friend of mine, Grace Simon, who is a certified coach with the John Maxwell Team. The one thing that always stands out for me is Grace saying to me, "I refuse to buy into your limited beliefs about yourself!"
If you feel you are struggling with a mental disability like depression, then this will likely require assistance from a medical professional. Start with your family doctor. They can guide you and maybe prescribe medication to help you cope. They will also help by referring you to professionals that deal with issues of the mind. If you cannot afford a professional, there are community or government funded resources available to help you get the help you need.
If you are experiencing a mental health or addictions related crisis:
Contact your doctor
Go to the nearest hospital

Mindset matters because it's the foundation on which everything else is built. If we want to overcome our struggles, we need to start by making sure that our mindset is in the right place. Acknowledge that your mind is powerful, identify any negative thinking patterns, and surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you. You can do this. NO REALLY! You can do this!
